Officials told to start pre-monsoon works in port town from Monday

VASCO

Vasco MLA Daji Salkar has directed officials to begin pre-monsoon works in Vasco from Monday.

He was addressing a joint meeting with representatives of various departments including Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), Deputy Collector, Fire Department, WRD, health, electricity and other departments to review pre-monsoon works and take immediate steps to prevent flooding in Vasco.

"We will start pre-monsoon works from Monday and MMC will start the de-silting work first. We will seek weekly reports and convene another meeting after 15 days,” Salkar told reporters.

“We have instructed the electricity department to trim dangerous branches in advance to avoid power cuts. We have also told the fire department to be ready and engage in pre-monsoon works.”

“We have also told the health department about their requirements in advance so that we can procure fogging machines and other medicines from the government.”

“All departments push the responsibility of pre-monsoon work on the MMC and expect them to hire labours, but no one pays the MMC. As of now, the MMC requires workers for de-silting and later during the monsoons, these workers can be given to the fire department,” said Salkar.

The MLA insisted that all departments and the municipality need to coordinate in carrying out these pre-monsoon works.

“The electricity department claims it can trim branches but can’t carry them while the MMC says there is a shortage of vehicles and staff. This coordination issue has to be addressed so that both departments jointly take up pre-monsoon works," said Salkar.

Will seek funds for new Mormugao municipality vehicles, says MLA

VASCO:

Vasco MLA Daji Salkar said he would seek funds to get new vehicles for the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC).

“Some MMC vehicles are under repair and cannot be put to use to clean the drains or take away the mud that is de-silted. The MMC has already put up a proposal to buy six new trucks, a garbage compactor and JCB machines.”

“Within the next week, I will take this up with the newly appointed urban development minister to release funds for new vehicles,” said Salkar.
