State nets higher fish catch in 2021

In what will be good news to fishing communities, the production of fish in the State has been on the rise since 2020.

The Economic Survey Report which was tabled in the Assembly stated that marine fish production in the State was 1,21,469 tonnes in 2021 as against 96,162 tonnes in 2020.

Besides, inland fish production was 5,002 tonnes in 2021, in comparison to 4,749 tonnes in 2020.

There has been a substantial increase in the production of fish like Mackerel, Shark Fish, Seer Fish, Pomfret, Tuna, Reef Cod and Crabs in 2021 as compared to the previous year. However, there has been a decline in the catch of some fish like sardines and prawns between 2020 and 2021.

As far as inland fish production is concerned, there has been an increase in the production of small prawns and Mullets.

On the other hand, there has been a decrease in inland crab and oyster production, with 184 tonnes of oysters in 2020 to 127 tonnes in 2021.
