Okra production has been abundant in Ravan village under the Keri Panchayat area of Sattari taluka this year.
For the last few years, the village has been on the agricultural map of Goa for the production of okra and this year too, large scale production of the vegetable has started.
At present, 700 kg of okra is being harvested every day and all these products are going to various vegetable selling counters of the Horticulture Corporation.
It is learned that for the last few years, farmers in Ravan village have been cultivating different types of vegetables on their land along the reservoir water of the Anjunem Dam project in the Keri Panchayat area.
Cultivation of various veggies
The farmers in the village have been cultivating vegetables in small quantities for the last several years. Later, some farmers insisted on increasing the production of vegetables. The villager has been focusing on the cultivation of okra for the past few years. For the last five years, the village of Ravan has been producing a large number of vegetables on the map of Goa. Last year, more than 10 tonnes of okra was planted. This year too, good quality okra has been produced and it is learned that a huge yield of okra is being harvested at present. The production of okra in this area goes entirely to the various selling counters of the Horticulture Corporation of Goa and it is in good demand.
The Radhika & JK variety
Meanwhile, according to sources, this year these farmers have been cultivating Radhika and JK varieties of okra. Initially, the Horticulture Corporation made some efforts to procure this okra, but after various attempts at different levels, it has become clear that the okra variety is in huge demand among the people of the area.
Harvesting 700 kg per day
Okra seeds were planted in these areas about two and a half months ago.
At present, a good quantity of okra has been produced. According to sources, more than 700 kg of okra is being harvested every day. More than 20 farmers from Ravan have ventured into this type of vegetable production.
Ravan village is now arriving on the agricultural map of Goa for the cultivation of okra and other types of vegetables. The hard work that the farmers in this area are doing is something that can inspire many cultivators. Everyone has vacant land, however, if the same is converted to develop agricultural products, it will not take long for Goa to become self-sufficient in vegetable production.
According to agricultural producer Gopal Gavas, large scale production of okra has commenced in these areas following each other's example. This is generating a lot of revenue and the use of water from the reservoir of the dam has prompted landowners in the area to focus on growing different types of vegetables on their land.
Chudamani Hularnakar said that due to the variety of vegetables being cultivated in these areas, the citizens of this area are contributing in a good way towards making their village ideal.
Kunda Bandekar, Nakul Pikulkar, Kirtimala Pikulkar, Sneha Gavas, Rajni Gavas, Prabhakar Gavas, Dulo Pikulkar, Nilesh Kerkar and also expressed their views in this regard.
The farmer opined that this work is contributing towards the strengthening of the economy.
