The old and unsafe commercial building owned by Honda village panchayat at Postwada, Honda in Sattari taluka will be demolished on June 22. The demolition will begin at 10:00 a.m. using bulldozers, as ordered by the North Goa District Administration.

The three-storey structure, built around 1994–95, has been declared structurally unsafe and a risk to public safety. The decision was taken after repeated assessments by authorities.

As per the order issued by the Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), North Goa, who heads the District Demolition Squad, the building is unfit for use. Officials from the Valpoi Block Development Office (BDO) have been directed to remain present during the demolition.

Laxmin R. Naik (EOVP) and Rajesh Delvi (Junior Engineer) will supervise the work and ensure safety measures are followed. They must also submit a compliance report after completion. The order states that responsibility will be fixed in case of any lapses.

The Panchayat Secretary has been assigned duties including identification of the structure, coordination with the demolition team, record keeping, and smooth execution of the process.

The building was constructed on Panchayat land along the Valpoi–Honda road to generate income for the local body, with financial support taken as a loan under a scheme of the Directorate of Panchayats. The ground floor was used for shops, while the upper floors were meant for offices or residential use. However, poor maintenance led to gradual damage, and the upper floors remained largely unused.

The Public Works Department (PWD) had declared the structure unsafe several years ago, but demolition was delayed. In recent years, cracks and weakening of structural elements increased concerns, especially as the building is located in a busy area near a school. Residents had raised fears of collapse during the monsoon.

Following the order, all shops have been closed, forcing traders to relocate and face financial losses. However, the administration has prioritised public safety.

Safety measures, including traffic regulation and restricted access, will be in place during demolition. Citizens have been urged to cooperate.

After demolition, the site is expected to house a modern Panchayat complex with shops, a health sub-centre and a multipurpose hall.
