MARGAO
Is the road from the Old Market circle to Ravindra Bhavan junction Bishop Rebello road or the Opinion Poll Square?
Two months after the government had inaugurated the Opinion Poll square, this question has come to haunt the Margao Municipal Council as it believed in many quarters that the civic body has changed the name of the road from Bishop Rebello to Opinion Poll square.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudsai, however, denied the allegation that the municipality has changed the name of the road. “There’s a lot of misconception in the minds of the public that the civic body has changed the name of the road. This is factually incorrect,” she said.
The Chairperson pointed out that resolution No 4651 adopted by the Margao municipality is very clear that the road continues to be named after Bishop Rebello, while the rectangular stretch along the road constitutes the Opinion Poll square.
Citing the instance of Connaught Place in Delhi, the Babita said there are many roads originating at the Connaught Place, while at the same time retaining the name of the place. “Opinion Poll circle, besides being the place where the commemorative portraits of the stalwarts are put up, will become a place for art and culture,”
Babita said, while asserting that the Old Market-Ravindra Bhavan circle road continues to be named after Bishop Rebello.
