At a time when the world marks World Water Day and emphasises the importance of saving water, residents of a locality in New Vaddem in Vasco are already aware about the grim consequences of having to live with little or no water. They have had virtually no water supply since the past two months.
Several residents in the locality claim they are now dependent on tankers for their daily water needs.
Speaking to reporters, Kamini Govekar, a senior citizen of New Vaddem in Vasco, said there has been virtually no water supply for the last two months and though there is a well, it is difficult to source water from the well.
“We get up early at dawn to store water, but there is no water supply. We are facing a lot of difficulties. Sometimes, there is a meagre flow of water at around 6 am, but it lasts for barely 20 minutes,” said Govekar.
Another aggrieved resident, Nanda Joshi, said they have been dependent on water tankers for their daily needs.
“We get up at 3 am and there is no water supply. Since the last two months, there is no water, not even a drop. We have small kids to take care of and there are exams going on and we are facing lot of difficulties,” said Joshi.
Social activist Vinod Kinelkar said people in the locality have been hit by water shortage for about two months.
“It is sad that senior citizens and women have to compromise on their sleep for water supply. I request Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho to resolve this issue confronting residents of New Vaddem,” said Kinelkar.
No water shortage, change service pipeline: PWD AE
VASCO: Insisting that there was no water shortage to the affected area in New Vaddem, PWD Assistant Engineer Vishwambar Bhende on Thursday said there was a chance that the service line could be choked.
“There is no water shortage. Sometimes, the service line taken by houses needs to be replaced every 10 years, but people ignore it for long. At times, the pipeline is so corroded that the line gets choked and people should replace the line at regular intervals. It is the duty of residents to change the pipeline laid for water,” said Bhende.
