One injured, cars damaged as wall collapses at Sancoale

VASCO
The treasurer of a housing society was seriously injured while two cars were damaged when the compound wall of a residential complex collapsed following heavy rains near MES college in Sancoale on Friday morning.

According to sources, rainwater had accumulated in the adjacent area and put pressure on the compound wall. Vijay Sawant was at the site when the wall suddenly collapsed, injuring him and damaging two cars.

On hearing the news, Cortalim MLA Anton Vas rushed to the spot and assured all possible help to the residents.

Chairman of the building complex Taj Shaikh said Sawant was admitted to a private hospital in Chicalim on Saturday.

“A huge quantity of water had been accumulating in the neighbourhood area due to continuous rains and sensing danger, we had carried out an inspection only to realise that the flow of water from the neighbourhood area into the drainage was very slow,” said Shaikh.

“After the inspection, Sawant decided to remove his car which was near the compound wall, when the entire wall collapsed and water gushed out in full force. Sawant was trapped in the debris, injured his legs,” said Shaikh.

Vidyanagar Residents Association Secretary Ganesh Lamani said this incident should be an eyeopener for authorities to look into drainage issues.

Cortalim MLA Anton Vas said he would take up the issue with residents so that they can offer suggestions to improve the drainage system in the area.
