PERNEM: One person was killed while four others were injured in a road mishap involving two trucks and a motorcycle near the Pernem Municipal Council (PMC) building on Saturday evening.
According to reports, the mishap took place at about 6.45 pm as a Karnataka truck (KA-17B-4194) carrying a harvesting machine was travelling from Parcem to Pernem.
The Karnataka truck was moving behind a sand truck (GA-08-U-6090), while an Activa scooter (GA-11-A-9954), driven by Ravindra Teli of Naibhag-Poroscadem, was proceeding between two trucks.
The Karnataka truck rammed into the Activa scooter and the motorcycle carrying Teli was dragged to a distance of about 50 metres, killing him on the spot.
The Karnataka truck also knocked down a pedestrian, Achit Dabolkar of Siolim, injuring him in the process.
The Karnataka truck driver, Mahesh Devgiri, and two others in the cabin, truck cleaner Hussain and Fayyaz Khan were also injured.
All injured persons were shifted to the GMC hospital at Bambolim.
Teams from the Pernem police and Pernem fire services rushed to the site and pull out the body of Tali from under the truck.
Locals claimed that the presence of the sand truck prevented the Karnataka truck from knocking down people, who were visiting the popular Pernem Punav roadside fair at the time of the road mishap. Pernem police is investigating the incident.
