One teacher’s suspension expected to be upheld

CAMURLIM STUDENT ASSAULT

MAPUSA

The suspension of one of two teachers involved in the alleged assault of a 9-year-old student at Shree Saraswati Vidyamandir Primary School, Camurlim, is expected to be upheld following a hearing with the Director of Education on Monday.

Director of Education Shailesh Zingde met with the school management and both accused teachers before announcing that a formal order would be issued on Tuesday.

"I held a meeting and heard both the teachers and the school management. The order will be issued tomorrow," Zingde said.

Sources from the Education Department indicated that the suspension of one teacher is likely, as the second teacher was employed on a contractual basis.

"The other teacher was on contract, so there is no question of suspension. The school management will have to abide by the contract terms," a source confirmed.

The hearing, which was originally scheduled for September 12, took place on September 16. It involved the school management and two teachers, Sujal Gawade from Verem and Kanisha Gadekar from Pirna, both of whom were arrested on September 5 for allegedly assaulting a Class IV student.

According to reports, the student sustained multiple injuries, including bruises, cut marks, and blood clots, after being struck with a steel ruler.

The teachers were subsequently suspended by the school's management following directives from the Education Department.

Initially, the teachers were charged under Section 8 of the Goa Children’s Act and provisions of the BNS Act.

Additional charges under Section 82 of the Juvenile Justice Act were later added.

The case has sparked widespread public outrage, with many calling for stringent action against the accused teachers.
