Opposition parties and Non-Governmental Organisations under the banner of Progressive Front of Goa held a ‘rasta roko’ on National Highway at Porvorim protesting the failure of the State government in protecting the interest of the State on the Mhadei issue throwing vehicular traffic out of gear.
The agitators, later cleared the blockade after submitting a memorandum to DyCM Babu Kavlekar who met the agitators at the venue.
Police had a tough time regulating traffic after serpentine queues were witnessed not only along the Mapusa-Panaji highway but also on all the internal roads of Porvorim. Ambulances carrying patients to the Goa Medical College were also affected.
On seeing the situation going out of control, police started physically lifting the agitators and requested the leaders to clear the road.
Former Revenue Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, former DyCM and leader of Goa Forward Party Vijai Sardesai, President of Mahila Congress Adv Pratima Cutinho, Prajal Sakhardande, Adv Hridayanath Shirodkar and others spoke on the occasion and demanded that the government take up the issue with Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change and ensure that the permission issued to the Karnataka government for Khalsa-Bhandura project is revoked immediately.
Earlier the delegation submitted a memorandum that demanded immediate revocation of environmental clearance given to Kalsa-Bhandura project; Prepare a fresh Master Plan for Mhadei and asked the government to formulate a
water policy as suggested and in consultation with the Mhadei Bachao Andolan Samiti.
While Khaunte demanded that the all-party delegation headed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead of meeting Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, Sardesai said the government’s stunt of taking an all-party delegation to Delhi was merely an eye wash.
