PANAJI
Thanks to an error in the delimitation process for Corporation of the City of Panaji over 200 voters from the Taleigao village have been conferred the right to vote in the March 6 polls to elect corporators.
The houses, which are shown in the Taleigao village panchayat as well as CCP electoral rolls are mainly from the areas of Borbhat, Vodlem Bhat and Shankarwadi have been included in Ward 17 of the CCP.
The list of houses include House No 176, 187, 03/04, 3, 16/111, 111, 112/1, 112/4, 112/4/4, 112/4/5, 112/4/6, 342/2, 342/4, 344/3, 16/111/F, 560 and 568, among others. Nevertheless, there are chances of finding such cases in wards bordering the village of Taleigao.
Sources, however, informed that nearly 35 of these voters are from Vodlem Bhat, nearly 40 from Shankarwadi, while over hundred are from Borbhat.
Speaking to The Goan, one of the voters whose name reflects in both panchayat as well as from Shankarwadi informed that while he has voted for panchayat elections, he will now get an opportunity to cast his vote for CCP elections too.
Another voter said, “Why should we bother about what the government has done. We got to vote for panchayat elections and now the municipality. So why make an issue out of it?”
However, a senior official in the government informed that some of the areas in the panchayat jurisdiction can be included in the municipal area, for which a laid down procedure needs to be followed. However, this time, no notification of such kind has been issued.
“If such discrepancies are observed then the government will have to issue a notification to denotify all these houses”, informed the official.
The State Government had notified the delimitation of CCP’s wards on January 8. It was carried out by the State Government, through the Revenue Department machinery including Deputy Collector and Tiswadi Mamlatdar for rationalisation in the number of voters across the 30 wards.
After this process, 17 of the wards had seen a decrease while 13 had seen an increase in the number of voters. The major decrease was seen in ward 4 with nearly 451 voters, followed by ward 16 with 378 voters.
Though the delimitation was carried out for the purpose of rationalisation, it was observed that some of the wards had double the number of voters in another ward.
