The State has several critical bottlenecks where traffic crawls during peak hours. While the commuters are thrown off balance in the worsening traffic chaos recorded every single day, it hasn’t discouraged people from purchasing new vehicles.
The beginning of the New Year -- to be precise January 1 to January 9 -- saw sales of over 2,000 vehicles with Mapusa Regional Transport Authority (RTA) topping the registrations chart followed by Margao, Panaji, Ponda and Vasco RTAs.
Of the private, passenger and cargo vehicles rolling out on the city roads, two-wheelers constitute the highest. The State has so far recorded sales of 1,174 two-wheelers and 628 cars including the ultra-luxury BMW, Jaguar, and Mercedes Benz-make automobiles, besides 102 Goods Carriers among others.
Being one of the major sources of revenue for the Transport Department, sales of these few days have added around Rs 10.34 crore to its overall collection of Rs 30.82 million approx.
The last calendar year saw the sale of 70,792 new vehicles, registering an increase of 38.83 per cent. The sales in 2022 were much higher than the earlier two years -- 50, 993 vehicles in 2021 and 42, 442 vehicles in 2019 -- but it failed to touch the pre-pandemic mark of 74,324 registered in 2019.
Not only did all the major categories of vehicles witness a huge growth in sales last year, but the number of bikes and cars swelled to over 67,000 including commercial, the result of which is evident on the Goans roads. The total sales fetched the government Rs 3.22 approx million, a growth of 44.58 per cent.
The upward trend in registration of new registrations months after the Goa government claimed it was considering curtailing permits for new cars to reduce congestion of roads. According to the Goa government’s Economic Survey report 2021-22, the State has around 15.27 lakh registered vehicles, for a population of nearly 16 lakh.
Whereas, the government’s push for electric vehicles and initial subsidy scheme has still not convinced people to go green. The latest figures indicate that the year has recorded 178 electric vehicles (EVs) as against 1,635 petrol vehicles being the highest, 162 diesel, 88 petrol/hybrid, 17 petrol/CNG and nine CNG.
Similarly, last year the figures were 5,678 EVs, 58,649 petrol vehicles, 4213 diesel and 1,488 petrol/hybrid.
