A day after The Goan highlighted mounds of waste left behind at Colva beach after New Year celebrations, tourism officials finally descended at the beach on Wednesday for an ‘on the spot’ assessment of the situation.
Overflowing bins welcomed the tourism officials to Colva beach on Wednesday morning as they inspected the site following reports of waste lying unattended for days together. After the inspection, an official clicked photographs of the overflowing bins, and waste and litter left behind at the beach since the last
few days.
Incidentally, as the tourism officials collected photographic evidence of the overflowing bins, employees engaged by the garbage collection contractor made their presence felt at the beach and began collecting the waste. The contractor could not satisfactorily explain to the media why the waste was allowed to pile up for the last six days, though he tried to defend himself saying that the waste was being lifted away on a day-to-day basis. The tourism officials told the media that they will submit a detailed report backed by photographs to the Tourism Department for further action against the contractor.
Shack owners from Colva and along the coastal belt have been crying foul over the contractor’s failure to lift the waste periodically, turning the beach stretch into an eyesore, and raising fears that the situation may drive away visitors from the beach stretch.
The Sarpanch also sent a copy of the Curtorim Vision 2020 plan formulated by the panchayat body for the consideration of TCP.
