The Paliem Gram Bachao Committee has decided to oppose dredging work for a proposed coal transportation jetty in the Tiracol river at Aronda.
At a meeting in the Shree Brhaman temple at Kiranpani-Paliem on Friday, the members also objected to plans to transport coal in the Tiracol river.
According to sources, a company has set up a jetty at Aronda and has plans to undertake coal transportation activities.
In order to facilitate movement of boats, the company had approached the government authorities for permission to dredge the river. In response, the company was asked to obtain permission from other authorities, including the local panchayat, CRZ, environment, noise pollution control board and bio-diversity.
Speaking at the meeting, Adv Prasad Shahapurkar said the locals are opposed to this dredging work in the Tiracol river and have threatened to take the matter to court if the government were to accord its sanction to the project.
Sachin Parab, former Kerim sarpanch Francis Rodrigues, former Palyem sarpanch and panch Babni Arolkar, Dattaram Naik and Agustino Dsouza were among those present at the meeting.
