Announcing the 'Mission to Zero Waste' initiative the capital city is aiming for a zero-waste Carnival and the Corporation of the City or Panaji (CCP) has partnered with corporate and casinos to support this initiative.
The city is gearing up for the Carnival festivities with Carnival masks, colourful streamers and bright decorations, and the Samba Square at the Jardin Garcia de Orta and the Sunset Carnival venue at the Mandovi promenade are being decked up for the four-day event starting on February 26 and closing on March 1.
“In keeping with the city of Panaji's continuous efforts to adopt a sustainable approach, the city has announced 'Mission to Zero Waste' and is committing to making this Carnival celebration a zero-waste event with the core objective being to educate citizens on the importance of waste segregation at source, the importance of waste management and being more conscious about waste,” announced Agnelo Fernandes, Commissioner, CCP, adding, “We have partnered with CAM Industrial Services, Deltin Group and Majestic Pride Group to support this initiative.”
"The CCP's team of waste collectors and segregators collect our waste, sift through the contents and process it. Day in and day out they deal with our waste. There is an urgent need to understand that when our waste goes out, another human being interacts with it, segregates it, and treats it further with the available facilities. Let's spare a thought for the work they do,” said the Commissioner.
"We, at CAM Industrial Services, will be setting up several multiway segregation stations at the Carnival venues in Panaji. These will be manned and supervised by our team and CCP. Additionally, appropriate signage which spreads awareness on the waste issue and stakeholder engagements are being organized to educate citizens on the importance of segregation of waste at source,” explained Abigail Fernandes, COO, CAM Industrial Services.
“Carnival is a festival that is celebrated with enthusiasm across the city and we, at the Deltin Group, are happy to partner with the CCP on the 'Mission to Zero Waste initiative' in the city's efforts to adopt sustainable practices. Nearly two decades ago, the city of Panaji led the segregation initiative by introducing novel concepts of garbage segregation at source and door-to-door collection of waste, way before they were replicated in the rest of India. Continuing to adopt the same practices, Panaji is gearing up to celebrate Carnival this year.
