Taking cognizance of a report published in The Goan Everyday, Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Surendra Furtado has written to the CCP Commissioner to take urgent steps for recovery of outstanding arrears.
"As per the press report published in the daily ‘The Goan' dated August 17, the list of major defaulters in payment of house tax has been released by this office. The major defaulters as per the list include some government departments such as Entertainment Society of Goa (Rs 1.47 crore), Customs and Central Excise (Rs 74.65 lakh) and Passport Office (Rs 31.48 lakh)," pointed out a letter by Furtado.
The Goan, through its report had published the names of tax defaulters released by CCP on its website. "The position is very serious and speaks of inefficiency and ineffectiveness by the officers of CCP who are empowered to recover the dues by taking coercive action under the provisions of CCP Act 2002," stated the letter. Lamenting that he has been pursuing and reminding the Commissioner to recover the outstanding house tax and other dues by issuing warrants to defaulters, the Mayor has stated, "It is regretted that the Commissioner has not taken any such action so far resulting in accumulation of the outstanding arrears of house tax and other dues."
"The Commissioner is therefore requested to take urgent action to recover the outstanding arrears by issuing warrants of attachment under the provisions of CCP Act as pointed out above urgently and this matter may be taken up seriously," he directed the Commissioner.
