The traders on Thursday closed The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) market as a protest against several issues.
The traders opposed the proposed municipal ordinance by the Goa government and also demanded proper facilities at the market.
The merchants were enraged by the sudden action of the FDI. FDI had inspected and taken action on shop occupants who were found violating laws.
This action incited the traders, and agitated merchants as a spontaneous protest kept the market closed for a day.
“There are no proper facilities in the market as the government has neglected it. Even the bare minimum repair work is not done for the last many years and we are running the market in difficult conditions," said a merchant.
CCP Mayor Uday Madkaikar, however, has justified the action of the FDI.
"Many shop owners are found violating the norms. They are selling gutka illegally and not maintaining hygiene in the premises. Pests and rodents are found loitering. So some action was needed to be taken against them," said Madkaikar.
