With the city set to be fully wi-fi equipped by May, and CCTV covered by August, Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) will also put forward a proposal to the government to appoint a ‘Chief Data Officer.’
With the vast amount of information that will soon be coming in, via CCTV, digital payment system, smart meters, and other methods, the government, and IPSCDL, will have to find a way to handle all this data, while making sure that it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.
MD and CEO of IPSCDL Swayandipta Pal Chaudhuri told media persons on Tuesday that the government will appoint a Chief Data Officer (CDO), in addition to the “very few police officers” who will have access to this data.
The CDO will look after the processing and management of the data, and also see to how this data is being utilised.
Principally, the data collected will be used to provide better services to the people, said Smart City officials.
The data will not be uploaded to a cloud, because of the vast amount of human-based data that will be collected, but will be stored physically at the data hub at the old PWD building near the old Patto bridge, as per the rules and regulations.
Further, there will be a local data center and disaster recovery center at the state IT hub, and the systems will have enough capacity to store at least three months worth of data.
There will be a back-up of all this data stored in Hyderabad. Chaudhuri also informed that the old data will be archived.
As far as wi-fi for the city goes, residents of Panjim and its outskirts, will be able to use the wifi to browse the internet at good speeds.
Other “smart cities” in India will also be appointing these data officers, as it is a government requirement.
As far as infrastructure under the Goa City Intelligent Management System (GCIMS) is concerned, IPSCDL is putting in place infrastructure for the entire state. So in case other cities in Goa want to connect at a later date, they will be able to.
Work under the GCIMS began last week, as reported in ‘The Goan’, and the city is set to have a lot of “smart changes” under this like smart parking, smart solutions to garbage, etc.
