Panaji's waste may soon get foreign treatment!

Holland-based firm offers solution with landfill gas technology

PANAJI

Holland-based Company, Plastic Export Zundert (I) Pvt Ltd has given an option of a landfill gas technology to the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) for treating Panaji’s waste.

To set up this technology, the company will require 10,000 square metres of land to treat the waste of entire Tiswadi taluka.

PEZ (I) Pvt Ltd held a presentation on the technology on Friday at CCP Hall which was attended by St Cruz MLA Atanasio Monserrate, Panaji MLA Sidharth Kuncalienkar, corporators as well as few Panaji-based NGOs.

Speaking to The Goan after the presentation, PEZ (I) Pvt Ltd Director David de Souza informed, “This is basically a landfill gas technology, an anaerobic process which will be carried out in a pit. The pit will be covered with a liner, which will be a bubble gum-like texture wherein the garbage will be placed. It is clearly mentioned in the technology that it is gas and water proof. The heat pressure will generate methane. It will be covered with liner and soil so that the vegetation can come up 1 to 1 ½ metre above the liner.”

Speaking about the advantages of this landfill gas technology, de Souza said, “It is cost effective and less labour intensive. And as it is not coming in contact with air, water and land, there is no pollution too.”

Stating that the company wants to set up a prototype with this technology, he said, “People are opposing the dumping sites as garbage is dumped in these places. Dumping is not what we are doing. We will treat it and convert the waste into an inert process by extracting the gas basically the bio gas.”

The company wants to use stone quarries and dead mining pits as landfill sites.

Reacting to the question raised about plastic waste, “When it comes to plastic, it will not give us methane. On the contrary, once this process is streamlined, we will consume plastic at our end though the plastic recycling plant.”

Meanwhile, CCP Mayor Surendra Furtado reacted positively to the proposal by the company to treat Panaji’s waste.

“If anyone is ready to give me a landfill site, I am ready to take the proposal forward”, said Furtado.
