Panchayat tells Raheja to stop work

Panchayat tells Raheja to stop work
PANAJI: The battle lines between Carmona village Panchayat and Mumbai-based realtor Ms Raheja Universal appears finally drawn.
A day after the Panchayat body headed by acting Sarpanch Savita Mascarenhas resolved to hold site inspection of the realtor's property on September 2, the Panchayat has dashed off a letter to Raheja to stop all work/operations at the site with immediate effect. The Panchayat body has warned the realtor saying the Panchayat shall be compelled/constrained to stop the same initiating legal action.

The Panchayat's body action comes against the backdrop of Raheja informing the Panchayat body earlier last week that the realtor had commenced excavation work and would start the plinth work as per schedule.
In its letter to Raheja, the Panchayat referred to the realtor's letter dated August 18 stating that they have commenced the construction work based on the licence issued by the previous panchayat. "Since, this panchayat is assessing the genuineness of the licence issued to you, it would be fair and just on your part to stop all work/operations at the proposed site, till the panchayat arrives at an appropriate decision," the Panchayat letter signed by the acting Sarpanch and Panchayat secretary Dinesh Amonkar stated.
The acting Sarpanch told The Goan that the project is not in the interest of Carmona village and its villagers as it will put enormous stress and pressure on the village and drain its limited resources and erode its infrastructure. "Such projects cannot be developed on the basis of a non-existent/imaginary road," the acting Sarpanch stated in the letter addressed to Raheja.
Savita reminded that the ruling Panchayat body has been elected by Carmona villagers on anti-Raheja project plank, while saying that Carmona village has no basic infrastructure to handle waste, sewage, roads, electricity, water supply etc.
She appealed to the villagers as well as the Carmona villagers Forum to attend the site inspection in large numbers.
In the meantime, a villager Wenzy Viegas has said the villagers of Carmona will come in large numbers for the site inspection on September 2 and express their concern over the alleged illegalities of the project. "Citizens of Carmona are mobilizing support for the Panchayat's move to hold the site inspection and fully cooperate with the acting sarpanch Savita Mascarenhas and her team of Panchas," Wenzy said as he recalled that opposition to the controversial Raheja project had dominated the campaign and most opposed to it were elected.
