Panchayats announce lockdown, but Socorro ignores pleas

Porvorim

Since Porvorim has become a Covid-19 hotspot, Penha de Franca and Salvador do Mundo Panchayats have announced lockdowns till May 9, 2021, while Soccoro Panchayat, of which the majority of panch members are from the BJP, has not joined hands with its neighbouring Panchayats in the lockdown.

Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has stepped in and written a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant requesting him to direct Socorro Panchayat to observe a lockdown in their area on similar lines as that of Penha de Franca and Salvador do Mundo Panchayats as Porvorim as a constituency is experiencing a rapid surge in Covid cases.

“Salvador do Mundo and Penha de Franca Panchayats have taken the decision of a lockdown to break the Covid chain. This step is similar to the decision taken by the Village Panchayat of Calangute which has been experiencing a huge surge in cases. Since the entire Porvorim constituency is a super“spreader, this lockdown would be effective only if the Village Panchayat of Socorro, which is an integral part of the Porvorim constituency, is also made a part of this lockdown protocol,” said Khaunte.

In the letter to CM, Khaunte has mentioned that during the meeting held at Mapusa on April 29, 2021, the Deputy Collector M Hage voiced that there is no specific area in the Porvorim constituency where the spread can be identified, but in fact this virus has spread across the entire constituency. Hence, marking minor areas as containment zones will not serve the purpose. It was agreed that Porvorim as a constituency needs immediate target action to reduce the infection. Hence requirement of Panchayat level lockdown is the immediate need of the hour.

“Therefore, I request you to provide urgently the necessary support in the form of directions to the Collector “ North, Police, Health and other concerned officials in order to ensure that this lockdown is implemented and strictly followed considering the rising Covid cases in the Porvorim constituency,” said Khaunte.
