Parra stresses on orderly waste collection

Parra sarpanch, Delilah Lobo informed the gram sabha that the solid waste management plant at Saligao has issued a circular to all panchayats that only segregated garbage will be accepted at the plant.
"At present, people dump mixed garbage in bins placed along the roadside. Henceforth, we will keep two bins - one for wet and other for dry waste - along the same route so that people get opportunity to place waste separately," Lobo said.
Garbage in the village was being lifted two times a day - once in the morning and later at noon.
Locals suggested that an awareness drive should be carried out in the village on segregation of wet and dry waste.
The sarpanch said arrangements will be made to distribute leaflets on garbage segregation in the village.
The sarpanch informed the gram sabha that door-to-door garbage collection was started in Lobo-vaddo on trial basis.
She said garbage workers encountered a problem in their collection routine, as some people whose waste was tied in plastic bags, was found scattered all around apparently by dogs, making it difficult for collection.
It was informed that the panchayat was receiving Rs 1 lakh from the government for garbage collection which was sufficient only for weekly collection of plastic waste.
Some locals informed the gram sabha that certain youth were engaged in motorcycle racing along the straight Parra-Saligao thoroughfare much to the detriment of the senior citizens.
They said despite complaints made to the police, no action was forthcoming on the issue. Villagers suggested building of speed breakers near the Cross at the Parra-Guirim road due to frequent accidents at the spot.
