Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday informed the House that work on construction of the Mopa airport will begin by the end of the current year.
He said six villages around the new airport will be given priority as far as the semi-skilled and unskilled jobs are concerned. Additionally, 14 families which have been displaced due to the project will be relocated at an alternate site after the monsoon season, he said.
"The six villages will be given first preference particularly for semi-skilled and unskilled jobs. This will be followed by people from the taluka and then the rest of the State," informed Parrikar.
He was responding to Taleigao MLA Jennifer Monserrate who sought to know the job potential at the upcoming airport and the categories of jobs that will be created for locals as well as people of Pernem taluka.
Responding to her, Parrikar informed that 1,750 jobs will be created in the first transition phase of 2020, and in the first phase of operation, it will be above 2000.
"Leadership positions would be about 100, highly skilled managerial positions will be about 425, skilled 425, semi-skilled 400, clerical 150 and unskilled about 500. Besides these, there will be great potential due to various activities at the airport like vehicles needed to ferry tourists from the airport to their respective destinations. There are many subsidiary businesses which can also come up," he informed.
He also informed that the 14 families of tribals will be relocated at an alternate site soon after the monsoon season. "The number of houses displaced is only 15, of which one has taken the compensation. The other 14 are being relocated for which identification of land has been taken up with their consent.
Tourism Minister who is the MLA of Pernem has held three-four meetings and sorted out the issue. Once the rains stops in one or two months we will be able to move them by into newly constructed houses," he said.
