The BJP-led government in the State is resting on the shoulders of Parrikar and he needs to find a safe constituency. And all of a sudd
en Panaji does not seem all that safe with Sidharth Kunkalienkar winning by a narrow margin of 1,069 votes.
With the other ‘Babush’ saying no to vacating his Mapusa seat for the chief minister the search seems to have stopped on the doorstep of Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral, who won by a huge margin of over 9,000 votes.
Cabral has offered to resign to smoothen the path for Parrikar’s return to the Assembly and the party high command has been appraised of the same. But for Parrikar, running away to Curchorem will be seen as a cowardly act.
Highly placed sources within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) informed that Cabral could resign after the presidential election, which are expected to be held before July 25.
Considering the fact that Parrikar has time till September 14 to get elected, the announcement is likely to be made by July-end.
Speaking to The Goan, a senior BJP Leader said, “The presidential elections will be held somewhere in July. Parrikar has still not resigned as the MP. So soon after the election, once he resigns to contest the by-polls, Cabral could resign making way for the chief minister to contest from Curchorem. However, the Party has still not taken a final call on which constituency the chief minister will contest from.”
Incidentally, during his first visit to Delhi after taking over as the chief minister, Parrikar had also taken Cabral with him to meet the Party’s National President Amit Shah.
Cabral is the first MLA who has been allocated the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) during the current tenure, a Corporation of his choice and preference. This step by the government also indicates that he is out of the race for a cabinet berth.
As per the statistics of recently held assembly elections, Curchorem can be termed as the safest constituency for Parrikar to contest as far as the margin is the among the 13 MLAs of the BJP who won the recently held assembly election, Cabral had secured the highest margin of 9088 votes, Curchorem could be termed as the safest constituency for Parrikar to contest the by-poll to get elected as an MLA.
As soon as the decision to bring Parrikar back to the State as chief minister was announced, Cabral was the first MLA to show willingness to resign as MLA for Parrikar to contest and in the same breath had said that if the CM contests from Curchorem it would be his responsibility to get him elected.
