Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the new building of S S Dempo College of Commerce at Cujira Merces, Javadekar rued the fact that owing to lack of learning outcomes and benchmarks, schools had become midday meal schools where students came only to eat and return home.
“For the last ten years we are implementing the Right to Education Act, without learning outcomes and the result is a big disaster. In north India in many states I have seen schools have become midday meal schools. There are many such schools… why? Because there is no accountability, there are no benchmarks established,” Javadekar said.
“There is continuous evaluation but there is no stopping students anywhere and he will be promoted till the end and therefore what you find is the sixth standard student can’t do math of third standard and seventh standard student can’t read what a fourth std kid should be able to,” Javadekar said.
