According to Agassaim Police Inspector Santosh Dessai, 36 students and a professor of Goa College of Architecture had gone to Talaulim on a study trip to the St Anne’s Church in a bus (GA-01-G-7640) from Panaji.
The bus had gone via the Kadamba highway and had turned to proceed to the St Anne’s church. The driver lost control of the bus at a sharp curve and slope, and the vehicle rammed the compound wall of the church. The bus came to a halt barely metres from the centuries-old church.
On hearing news of the mishap, St Andre MLA Francis Silveira and a police team rushed to the site. A fire brigade and 108 ambulance were also pressed into service as the driver, conductor, professor and 23 students were shifted to the GMC hospital, while the other students escaped unhurt.
