BJP MP Adv Narendra Sawaikar may have launched his South Goa poll campaign by offering prayers at Lord Damodar Temple at Vasco on March 15, but the campaign has come to a virtual halt in the taluka since the last one week following the demise of ex-chief minister late Manohar Parrikar
With barely a month before the State go to polls for the Lok Sabha, the demise of the late Parrikar has dampened campaign activities in Mormugao taluka. The campaign activity was suspended on account of the seven-day mourning period across the State.
Some party workers silently admit that the seven-day absence of campaigning could have been extremely crucial in giving BJP a head start, especially since the Congress is yet to announce its candidate for the South Goa LS elections. But none were willing to come on record to express these sentiments.
However, the BJP blocks in the taluka are all geared up to resume their campaign with a greater vigour and determination in Mormugao Taluka and many BJP workers have expressed confidence that Sawaikar would definitely win the South Goa LS elections.
Speaking to The Goan on Saturday evening, former MMC Chairperson and BJP State Executive committee member Deepak Naik said campaigning was most likely to begin in the Taluka from Monday.
“With the sudden death of Parrikar, we were in a state of shock and we observed a seven-day mourning. Parrikar was not only the CM but also the former defence minister and it is obvious that there could be no campaign during the state mourning,” said Naik.
Honestly, we still have nothing to worry as the Congress is yet to declare its candidate. Nothing is lost and we are all geared up. Though the main leader of the party is gone, we always have his guidance and inspiration to guide us into victory. We already have all the strategy ready and our Karyakartas will work with extra vigour considering that we have a new fight ahead without our guiding light and considering that there is little time left,” Naik added.
BJP Mormugao Mandal President Sanjay Satardekar said Sawaikar had begun the campaign but the demise of Parrikar had halted the poll campaign.
“We have lost our tallest leader. Even though campaigning has stopped during the entire mourning week, our Karyakartas are strong and capable to carry out the campaign at their levels through out the constituency.”
“The lull of seven days makes absolutely no difference, because the Karyakartas have been in close touch with each other all this while. Party work is the most important agenda for our Karyakartas and they have been in touch regarding planning and statistics regarding the upcoming LS elections,” said Satardekar.
