A huge portion of a mango tree fell on the government school at Kirlawada-Chimbel, causing minor damage to the roof of the school and the stage.
Luckily, the incident happened on Sunday night due to which a major tragedy was avoided as children normally played on the stage.
However, the incident has brought into sharp focus the refusal of forest department officials to act on a complaint by school authorities to act against the dangerous tree.
A local Tukaram Kunkolkar informed The Goan that school authorities had written to forest department officials to initiate action against the dangerous tree, but no action was forthcoming.
“On one hand, the forest department grants permission to fell trees for project in Provedoria property but fails to do the same in the case of this dangerous tree which was a threat to the lives of the students,” Kunkolkar chided.
“If the incident had occurred when the students were around, then a major tragedy would have occurred,” Kunkolkar pointed.
Meanwhile, the other portion of the tree still stands tall and it continues to prove a threat.
