MARGAO
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) lone MLA in the Goa Legislative Assembly, Churchill Alemao has said that NCP supremo Sharad Pawar has told him to make the party a force to reckon within Goa to face future elections.
He further said the Congress should take note of the rise of the NCP in Maharashtra, exuding confidence that the NCP will also grow in Goa as well.
Returning home after calling on the NCP supremo Sharad Pawar along with daughter Valanka and son Savio in Mumbai, the Benaulim MLA said that the result in the recently held elections for the Maharashtra Assembly is a clear signal to the Congress in Goa that the party should think and introspect, more so when the party had refused to enter into a tie-up with the NCP in the 2017 Assembly election.
“I don’t want to go into the past, but with the NCP emerging a force in Maharashtra, the party will be a force to reckon within Goan politics. Right now, the focus of the party would be to strengthen the party base in Goa to meet future electoral challenges,” he added.
Churchill’s stand on future tie-ups with the Congress to fight elections in Goa assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that the main opposition party had spurned the party offer for a tie up for the 2017 Assembly election.
The Congress had also cold shouldered Churchill’s offer to support the Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha election on condition that the Congress should agree to leave a couple of seats for the NCP to fight the next Assembly election.
