The Gram Sabha of Penha de Franca on Sunday saw a sparse turnout, with only a handful of villagers and three of the 11 panchayat members in attendance. The meeting, which began at 10.30 am, concluded within half an hour.
Sarpanch Swapnil Chodankar informed the members that the panchayat had received the site plan for the proposed Chorao-Salvador do Mundo bridge and presented it at the meeting.
Villager Augie D’Mello sought a detailed presentation of the plan to explain the bridge’s landing point and the proposed movement of vehicular traffic.
He expressed concern that the narrow road connecting Salvador do Mundo and Penha de Franca would be unable to accommodate increased traffic. He also pointed out that widening the road would require the demolition of several houses and shops.
Chodankar said the bridge alignment did not pass through Penha de Franca but assured villagers that the panchayat would request the concerned authorities to conduct a special presentation for residents.
He also informed the meeting that around 40 per cent of the stray dog census had been completed, with over 80 dogs identified so far. The survey is being conducted following directions from the Bombay High Court and the Directorate of Panchayats.
The sarpanch further said the existing bus stop at Char-Manas Malim had been demolished and a new one would be constructed, with discussions underway with companies.
Issues concerning frequently malfunctioning traffic signals at Sai Service junction and roadside parking at Brittona were also discussed.
