VASCO
The ‘Rojgar Bachav Abhiyan’ (RBA), an organisation formed to fight for legal rights and restore the consent to operate by MPT that was revoked by Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), plans to have a peaceful rally in Vasco on Tuesday.
RBA has been formed after the GSPCB had rejected the application for consent filed by MPT to handle cargo at Mooring Dolphins and also withdrew the consent to operate issued to South West port Limited who were providing employment opportunities as well as revenue to MPT in the form of port dues , custom dues, railway freight and other charges to state and Govt Agencies.
RBA has said through a press note that MPT is the single largest employer in Goa and provides direct and indirect employment to people from every nook and corner in Goa.
The press note also said that MPT acts as a single largest hub of economic activity in Goa contributing to the state’s GDP.
According to RBA, after 2012, due to iron ore ban, the state economy was hit and business had to suffer huge losses and employment and many establishments depending on MPT directly and indirectly were hit and a lot of barges also are seen rusting in the rivers of Goa.
The RBA felt that the recent move by GSPCB could lead to similar situation creating losses for direct and indirect dependents and also create mass unemployment.
