A 23-year-old woman lost her life while another sustained serious injuries after they were knocked down by an SUV near the Hyundai showroom at Verna on Saturday.
Verna police have booked the driver, Jonathan Pereira (19) of Agassaim for rash and negligent driving after his Mahindra XUV-500, reportedly travelling from Panaji towards Margao via Titan Junction, struck two female pedestrians who were crossing the road.
The deceased has been identified as Anisha Satish Borkar (23) of Quepem. She was declared brought dead at the PHC in Cansaulim. The second victim, Akshata Naik, a native of Karwar, is currently undergoing treatment at the same health centre.
Police said the driver failed to maintain control of the vehicle and hit the pedestrians near the busy stretch close to the Hyundai showroom.
An FIR has been registered against the driver under Sections 281, 125(B), and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Sections 196 and 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act. The investigation is being conducted by PSI Pramila Fernandes of Verna Police Station under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar.
