Penha de Franca Sarpanch Swapnil Chodankar and panch member Francis D’Souza visited Malim early Friday morning and directed wholesalers to stop the sale of fish.
Speaking to The Goan, Chodankar said wholesale fish vendors had been assembling below the Mandovi bridge near the Malim jetty between 4 am and 6 am with their vehicles and were selling fish at wholesale rates to their customers.
“The Panchayat has received complaints from the Mandovi Fishermen Cooperative Society and the locals, stating that these fish wholesalers had become a nuisance and should be prohibited from selling fish at Malim.”
“They have mentioned in the complaint that a large crowd gathers near the Malim Jetty
in the morning to purchase fish and no social distancing is maintained nor were people wearing masks,” said Chodankar.
Responding to their complaints, Chodankar and panch member Francis D’Souza visited Malim at about 5 am on Friday and directed wholesalers to stop the sale of fish.
“These fish vendors are not from Porvorim constituency but come from neighbouring Covid hotspot areas. The panchayat has not given license to these wholesalers to sell fish at Malim.’
“The panchayat has written to Porvorim police requesting action against those selling wholesale fish near Malim Jetty,” said Chodankar.
