The village in Bardez is way ahead of the second best village -- Siolim which has managed only 60 tons of dry waste.
A review meeting of the dry waste collections of Bardez panchayats was held at the office of the pollution control board on Monday morning.“The better performing ones were asked to explain the systems that they were implementing in order that others could follow suit,” Chairman of the Goa State Pollution Control Board José Manuel Noronha said.Besides Penha de França and Siolim, the leaders of the pack included Anjuna Caisua with 58 tons, Saligao with 21 tons, Parra with 20 tons, Tivim with 18 tons and Arpora-Nagoa with 13 tons.
Villages at the bottom of the pack were Guirim with 22 kgs and Oxel 25 kgs.
A uniform demand among the panchayats was to ask for better pay to be given to
the daily wager from `350 to `500, a demand which hasn’t yet been agreed to by the board.
The board however sought inputs from the panchayats on whether they needed new or better equipment which the board could then source through CSR funding from corporates.
The Board has also made it clear that no panchayat should mix wet waste with dry waste as such mixed waste is rejected by the Cement factories in Karnataka which have agreed to incinerate it. The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the GSPCB, the Member Secretary Levinson Martins, Director of Panchayats as well as members of the Goa Solid Waste Management Cell.
