PANAJI: Social worker and wife of Infosys co-founder Sudha Murthy, who inaugurated the 9th annual DD Kosambi Festival of Ideas, called for people in power to be more generous and compassionate with people as she revisited the ups and downs of her life.
Kala Academy’s Dinanath Mangeshkar Kala Mandir was brimming as people packed the auditorium as Sudha recounted her social work with the Infosys Trust and the case of the Devadasi community in the Raichur district of Karnataka.
“At the end of my work in Raichur, out of the 33,000 Devadasis in the area, 3,000 managed to get out of the system and give a life to their children. Many of their children are today doctors, engineers and lawyers,” she said.
Despite being the wife of one of the country’s biggest IT industrialists, Murthy said she tried her best to live the simple life and teach her children to do the same too.
She said as a person, one needed to spend at least 20 percent of their life with the society as it is a necessity. “Everyone must do this. There are different ways to achieve this but the need is to help the people and the society as a whole. Everyone should draw a line and say enough is enough,” she said in reference to earning income and making riches.
The festival that was inaugurated by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, also say Murthy share important life lessons as an engineering student and a home maker.
Engineering, she said, makes a person analytical, systematic and efficient pointing to how she runs her trust on Rs 270 crore with only five people. She also said a person should not be limited to what he should and shouldn’t do according to society but according to what was good for the person themselves.
“Social work needs money but more important is the need for field work. This is a must as it allows you to understand people and how they live,” said Murthy.
