Admitting that the state government should increase security on Goan beaches to stop attacks against women, Deputy Speaker and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Friday said people should also help the government in reporting untoward incidents to authorities.

“One hundred percent, security should be increased along the coastal belt. But besides police, people have to be vigilant. People should not tolerate irresponsible tourists. People’s participation is required to stop all this nonsense that is happening,” Lobo said to The Goan.

The Calangute MLA was responding to the two recent attacks against women “ of the gang rape at Betabatim beach and the molestation of a minor girl in his backyard.

Lobo said he would meet the Director General of Police and hold talks with him over the security along the coastal belt.

“I have spoken to the DGP on the phone. He has promised that police will do whatever is required to be done. I will hold a detailed discussion with him,” Lobo said.

Recounting a recent incident on Candolim beach, the Calangute MLA said that some tourists went with their cars right on the beach, even as locals turned a blind eye on the transgression.

“Locals are watching the vehicles moving towards the beach but nobody is questioning them. Nobody is calling the Goa Police. If you dial 100, police will come. Police presence was not there on Candolim beach,” he said.
