Heavy rains that lashed Pernem taluka on Tuesday brought down many trees and disrupted power supply, telephone connectivity and internet services in the taluka.
According to reports, a Kokum tree fell on the house belonging to Shivprasad Joshi at Malpem-Pernem. Fire fighters rushed to the site and cleared the tree. A jackfruit tree uprooted on the house belonging to Vinod Naik at Parsem, which was later cleared by the fire fighters.
The roads were flooded at Ashvem-Mandrem, Tuem, Morjim and Chopdem, causing inconvenience to the motorists. Power supply was disrupted for several hours, while there was no internet and telephone connection throughout the day.
Two workers injured in Ponda
Two workers were injured after a tree uprooted on a structure at Upper Bazar, Ponda, even as fire officials were kept busy clearing as many as nine trees that had fallen on roads and houses on Tuesday.
Fire station officer, Sushil Morajkar informed that they received calls from Priol, Usgao and Ponda. “A structure used for making sweets was damaged after a tree uprooted on it at Upper Bazaar Ponda,” he said. Two workers were injured in the incident. They were rushed to Sub District Hospital for medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses informed that another two workers rushed out after hearing a loud sound. A compound wall was damaged at Shantinagar, while one car parking shade was damaged at Khadpabandh due to falling of trees. One motorcycle was damaged near Almeida School after a coconut tree fell on it.
Incidents of uprooting of trees on roads were reported at Priol, Usgao and Ponda.
House damaged in Dhargal
A house was partially damaged after a tree uprooted on a house at Oxelbag-Dhargal on Monday.
According to the fire officials, they got a call at about 6.30 pm informing that a tree uprooted on the house belonging to Vamon Konadkar. The house owner suffered a loss of about Rs 5,000, while property worth Rs 70,000 was saved, said the fire officials.
Fire fighters Ratnaka Gawas, Vitthal Parab, Lakshdeep Harmalkar, Pradeep Asolkar and Avinash Naik cleared the tree from the house.
