Trupti Sawal Desai was on Wednesday elected unopposed as the chairperson of the Pernem Municipal Council (PMC) for a short term of about one-and-a-half months, before the five-year tenure of the council ends.
The post fell vacant after Vishakha Gadekar resigned as part of a mutual understanding among councillors.
Desai was elected at a special PMC meeting held on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by vice-chairperson Shivram Tukoji and councillors Vishakha Gadekar, Usha Nagvekar, Ashwini Palyekar, Madhav Sinai Desai, Siddhesh Pednekar and Manoj Harmalkar. Councillors Bappa alias Vishnu Salgaonkar and Rakhi Kashalkar were absent.
Pernem MLA Praveen Arlekar later visited the PMC office to greet Desai on her election.
Desai said that although she has a very short term as chairperson, she would try to take up development works with the support of the State government and the MLA.
When asked about reports of a proposal to shift the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) office from the Pernem government complex following the collapse of a portion of the ceiling that injured a head clerk, Desai said she had not received any such proposal.
“I have not received any proposal yet. If it comes to the PMC, we will discuss it and take a suitable decision,” she said.
