The illegal construction case involving former Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson Gonzaco Rebello came to the fore again with the petitioner knocking the doors of the Vigilance department to initiate legal action against municipal engineer Surendra Gaonkar and assistant engineer Vishant Naik for what he termed as issuing manipulated show cause notice to the former chairperson.

Questioning the decision of the MMC engineers to issue a notice under section 174 of the Goa Municipalities Act, petitioner Savio Dias drew attention of the Vigilance department that there was no question of any notice to the violator of law for constructing in a municipal land when such structures can be directly demolished by the municipal council. “In the instant case, the two municipal officials allegedly in connivance with the former MMC chairperson invoked section 184 of the Municipalities Act, thereby committing grave criminal offence and misguiding the higher ups," Dias said.

In fact, Dias claimed that because of the grave manipulations and conspiracy of applying the wrong sections to safeguard the law breaker the then chairperson, the case against the demolition of the illegal structure of the former chairperson is now unnecessarily delayed and dragged for almost one year.

Dias has called for action against the two officials, including their suspension to avert any bid to manipulate the municipal records.
