Inspector General of Prisons Omvir Singh Bishnoi on Thursday said the prison administration intends to run a petrol pump in the premises of Colvale Jail.
“The State government has approved this and Indian Oil Corporation is working to set up a petrol pump which will be run entirely by women,” said Bishnoi.
The Inspector General of Prisons was speaking after inaugurating a gymnasium for the officers and staff of Colvale Central Jail on Thursday, on the occasion of Liberation Day.
This gym has been set up through funds from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
“Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs and the Inspector General of Prisons have taken the initiative to set up this gym and we are grateful to them. This gym will be of great benefit to employees at Colvale Jail,” said Jail Superintendent Shankar Gaonkar.
Assistant Superintendent Bhanudas Pednekar and Deputy Superintendent Anil Gaonkar were among those present on the occasion.
Spice-making unit set up in jail
Inspector General of Prisons Omvir Singh Bishnoi also inaugurated a spice-making unit in the Colvale jail.
This will provide employment to female prisoners in the prison and the spice will be used in the kitchen of the prison at present. Over time, it is planned to supply these spices to government canteens and elsewhere.
Following a recommendations of a study committee headed by a judge, a separate kitchen has been set up in the prison for 50 women prisoners.
