An extension two-storey project of Sigma Laboratories at Caraswada-Tivim industrial estate caught fire on Sunday at about 11.30 am.

The new project was slated to start in a few days and

all kinds of modern machinery were already fitted in the building which has now been gutted in the fire thus resulting in severe losses.

Officials of Mapusa Fire station suspect that a short circuit may be the cause of the fire. While the fire started on the first floor of this extension project, because of foam sheet decoration, the flames extended to the second floor.

“Workers of an adjoining company raised an alarm after they saw thick smoke billowing out of the building,” informed officials at the Mapusa Fire station.

Fire Officer Basco Ferrao, Shivaji Naik rushed to the spot. Fire officer of Panaji Shrikrishana Parrikar, and Rama

Naik of Pilerne also arrived at the site.

Two fire tenders from Mapusa and Panaji and one from Pilerne were used to douse the fire. It took almost two hours to extinguish the fire.

The main building of the company was however, saved from the fire.

“We were in the process of putting the final touches to the new wing and were slated to start production within 15 days. Due to the fire, the company has had to bear heavy financial loss,” informed a company officer.

The exact loss, however, will be ascertained only after the company owner Dilip Kohilegi arrives in Goa.

Tivim Industrial estate manager Mukund Kaisukar, Mapusa Police DSP Vijay Chodankar, and Lady PSI Neha Sawal were also present.
