The Pilerne-Marra panchayat has received the Best Panchayat Award in the State for collecting the highest house tax for the year 2022-23.
Sarpanch Reshma Bandodkar and Panchayat Secretary Peter Martins received the award from Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho at a function in Chicalim on Sunday.
Speaking to The Goan, Pilerne Dy Sarpanch Ajay Govekar expressed happiness that the panchayat received this award in the house tax collection category.
“This was possible because of residents and commercial establishments who paid their taxes promptly on time. The panchayat goes to the doorsteps of residents who stay on Porvorim plateau twice a year as they find it difficult to come to the panchayat office to pay house tax,” said Govekar.
“The major tax collection is from the commercial establishments. Taxes collected are being used by the panchayat for development activities. The panchayat spends lot of money from the panchayat fund to undertake development of the village without waiting for funds from the government. Recently, the panchayat began work to lay the lawn on the ground near panchayat office by spending Rs 90 lakh from the panchayat fund,” said Govekar.
