The underground water pipeline on the Guirim-Mapusa service road ruptured yet again and part of the road caved in early Monday morning.
The rupture to the pipeline resulted in wastage of vast quantities of water even as the PWD officials rushed in and began work to repair the damaged pipeline.
According to locals, the incident took place at around 8 am, when the pipeline ruptured and the service road caved in near the Green Park junction at Guirim.
PWD officials informed that damage to the pipeline will affect water supply mainly to areas of Guirim, Sangolda and Anjuna.
Soon after receiving information, PWD Assistant Engineer Datta Raikar and other officials rushed to the spot to assess the damage. Water supply from all pipelines carrying water from Assnora treatment plant was stopped and repair work of the damaged pipeline began.
Raikar informed that work on the 500 mm diameter damaged pipeline has been taken up on war footing and if need be would continue even late in the night to complete the repair work on priority.
“This line was initially not under the paved road. With the service road constructed on the pipeline and with the consequent flow of traffic could be a possible cause for the pipeline to rupture,” Raikar said.
Incidentally, the pipeline had ruptured around the same spot nearly a year ago.
Meanwhile, the traffic police stopped vehicles from taking the service road and diverted the traffic from the highway.
