There has been growing resentment over a tyre factory at the Pissurlem Industrial Estate, with locals complaining of foul odour in the area.
The issue came up for discussion earlier this week when Pissurlem Sarpanch Devendra Parab spoke to Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral during his visit to Sattari and demanded action by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) against the factory.
There are two industrial estates in Sattari, one at Pissurlem and the other at Honda. Locals complained that the tyre factory, which is operating at the Pissurlem Industrial Estate, has been emanating foul odour and this has caused anger in the village and surrounding areas.
Locals claimed that frequent complaints had been made to the GSPCB, Sattari deputy collector, mamlatdar, police and the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), but no action had been initiated as yet.
Cabral is reported to have assured aggrieved locals that he would take necessary action and residents would not be put through to hardships on account of the factory
Later speaking to reporters, Pissurlem Sarpanch Devanand Parab said complaints had been made to authorities about the factory.
“A raid was conducted at the factory, but company officials were alerted about this raid and stopped operations at the factory,” said Parab.
“The foul odour is very dangerous to public health. A number of agitations were organised against this factory several times and panchayat members had even visited the factory many times to voice their objection to the operations. But there has been not action against the factory till date,” the sarpanch added.
