A resident of Alto-Porvorim has filed a police complaint accusing the Alto-Porvorim Sports and Cultural Club of renting out its premises for commercial activities and creating noise pollution at night.
In his complaint with Porvorim police, Dr Benjamin Braganza said the Alto-Porvorim Sports and Cultural Club was constructed under MPLAD funds to promote sports and cultural activities, but alleged that the club was now being misused by the present managing committee for birthday and commercial functions.
Dr Braganza claimed that most functions were being conducted late evening and were going on till night, flouting the noise pollution and control rules.
He added that many of these functions and celebrations were being held with fireworks, thereby causing noise pollution and disturbing the sleep and health of senior citizens and children.
He said residents on several occasions had highlighted these problems to the management of the club, but
nothing had been done in the matter.
The complaint stated that on Saturday night, loud bomb-type fireworks
were fired continuously for eight to ten minutes at around 10.05 pm.
When a telephonic complaint to this effect was lodged with the president of the committee, Dr Braganza said he was told in harsh words to file a complaint with the police as and when such incidents occur.
The complaint also stated that during a recent celebration at Porvorim, a spark from some fireworks had fallen on a stockyard of plumbing material, causing loss to property.
The complainant has requested Porvorim police to take appropriate action against the club in the interest of safety of lives and property of citizens.
Porvorim Police Inspector Vishvesh Karpe confirmed having received the complaint and said they have started inquiring into the matter.
