For effective management of the State’s water resources, the Water Resource Department has planned to install systems to get real-time data about the rainfall and other weather conditions. Taking advantage of Central aid under National Hydrology Project, the WRD will install Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) and Automatic Rain Gauge (ARG) at various locations across Goa.
The AWS will be set across six locations in Goa including at Porvorim, Ganjem, Gogol, Pajimol-Sanguem and Karapur-Sankhali. And, the ARG will be set up at Opa, Dhargal, Valpoi, Colvale, Chapoli and Cuncolim.
The real time data generated from AWS and ARG stations will be processed at centralised location.
WRD Executive Engineer, WD III, Ponda, Goa has initiated the process of selection of experienced technical agency for the installation, operation and maintenance of AWS and ARG.
The systems are expected to be in place within one year as the agency has to set them up within nine months after it is selected and issued the work order for the project.
The WRD under Hydrological Information System (HIS) is also setting up a Real Time Hydro-Met data acquisition network under National Hydrology Project to provide key data required for forecasting water inflows into the basin and other related activities.
A Real Time Data Acquisition System (RTDAS) will consist of a telemetry network of automated rainfall stations, automated weather station and water levels stations along rivers and reservoirs which will be installed to provide inputs to the RTDAS.
Under National Hydrology Project, the WRD is also planning to have Hydrographic and Topographic survey for
sedimentation survey of Selaulim reservoir in Sanguem taluka and Anjunem Irrigation Project in Sattari Goa. It may be noted that National Hydrology Project had been approved by the Centre in 2016 and it gives 100 per cent grant to States for specific projects.3-day wet spell predicted,
State put on ‘orange alert’
PANAJI: The India Met Department on Monday forecast heavy rainfall for the State from October 23 to 25, and has put the State on “orange alert”, which is an alert for the public to be prepared.
“Widespread moderate rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places is very likely to occur over Goa state from October 23 to 25,” the Department has said.
In view of the intense rainfall forecast, people are advised to abstain from outdoor activities as much as possible, said the Department. The possible impact of the heavy rainfall is likely to lead to flooding of susceptible informal settlements or roads, low lying areas, localized and short-term disruption to municipal services (water, electricity).
