Displaying the proposed berths via a PowerPoint presentation to The Goan, Jayakumar said MPT would acquire about 400 metres from the fishing jetty. “One end of the berth will have a ramp for passenger ferry services between the port and Dona Paula. MPT will also make provision for a cruise terminal,” he added.
“We are planning to construct a shopping mall so that tourists can buy their needs and can directly go to the city and other destinations. This will also boost the business of private taxis and the economy of small business establishments in the city,” Jayakumar told The Goan.
While the coastal and liquid cargo berth, passenger ferry services, provision for a cruise terminal and shopping mall will be located on the port side, the other side of
the berth would include a modern fishing jetty for trawler owners of Vasco with
modern facilities.
When asked about the situation of canoe owners, Jayakumar said: “Khariwada beach will not be touched and there will be enough area at the new modern fishing jetty to accommodate the canoes.”
To another query on whether there would be any interference from MPT or CISF as the new berth at Vasco would be shared by MPT and trawler owners, Jayakumar replied: “Once the fishing jetty is shifted, neither MPT nor CISF will have any role to play in the functioning of the fishing community.”
