Environmentalist and social activist, Fr Bolmax Pereira on Monday said that there were plans to plant around 1100 mangroves and get Kandelia candel species declared as the state Mangrove tree.
Fr Bolmax Pereira was speaking to reporters during the Mangrove conservation initiative programme where mangroves were planted near Zhorint, Sancoale along the Cortalim-Vasco Highway.
Fr Bolmax Pereira said that the Mangrove conservation initiative was taken on Goa statehood day by St Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim in association with Nisarga Nature's club, Chicalim youth farmers club and Goencho Ekvott.
"We have also been supported by Forest department, Goa Biodiversity board, ICAR and biodiversity management committees of Sancoale and Chicalim. This is a small attempt to collect portions of mangroves from the area near Sancoale's old church frontpiece and plant it at Bonde Bhat to increase the number of mangrove plants in Goa. We will also attempt to bring more species of Mangroves and start growing them by September-October months to other locations. We want to attempt to plant Mangroves throughout the year to increase their presence. We plan to plant around 1100 mangroves that we have collected," said Fr Pereira.
"We are also trying to get Kandelia candel species declared as the state Mangrove tree. Maharashtra also has its own state mangrove tree and we should also get Goa to have its own state mangrove tree. We have students and local residents participating in this event besides 75 volunteers who registered for the entire year for the Mangrove conservation initiative. Heritage Village has come ahead to fund our project," said Fr Pereira.
Orville Dourado, Founder member of Goencho Ekvott said that Fr Bolmax Pereira had been an inspirational force in the green revolution taking place across Goa.
"We appreciate the local community in Sancoale, Cortalim, Velsao and Cansualim and even places in North Goa have come to give back to the environment. This is just the start of the mangrove protection and we are going to take it across Goa and next week we may go south in Benaulim and Varca because we have got an invitation from these villages as well," said Dourado.
