Large quantities of plastic waste have been found dumped along the banks of the River Sal near the Margao wholesale fish market, triggering concerns among environmental activists that the waste could be washed into the river during the upcoming monsoon rains.
Questions are also being raised over the failure of contractors engaged by the authorities to promptly lift and scientifically dispose of the accumulated plastic waste.
A visit to the Margao wholesale fish market area revealed heaps of plastic waste dumped close to the riverbank, posing a potential threat to the fragile ecosystem of the River Sal and adjoining agricultural fields.
Expressing concern over the situation, social activist Crydon Medeira urged the authorities to intervene immediately before the waste is carried into the river by rainwater run-off.
“Every year during the monsoon, we see thermocol and other waste being washed into the River Sal and floating in the adjoining fields. The plastic waste currently dumped on the riverbank will inevitably find its way into the river, contaminating the water and damaging the environment,” Medeira said.
He questioned how the alleged illegal and unauthorised dumping of plastic waste had escaped the attention of the concerned authorities, including Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai.
“The waste poses a serious threat to the ecology and environment of the area. I hope the authorities take cognisance of the ground reality and initiate immediate corrective measures,” he added.
Environmentalists have warned that if the waste is not removed before the onset of heavy rains, it could pollute the river ecosystem and adversely affect nearby agricultural lands.
