Trinamool Congress Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Friday said a writ petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court on his behalf by Raju D’Souza seeking directions to the Delhi government and other authorities to rebuild the Little Flowers Church demolished in Delhi last year.
Addressing the media in the presence of the petitioner Raju D’Souza, a leader of Samajwadi Party (Chandrashekar) and TMC leader Adv Seoula Vas on Friday, Churchill said the petition has further prayed to the Delhi court to pass an order for allocating an area similar to that of the premises which he said was illegally demolished by the respondents, including the Delhi government.
Churchill has vowed to take the matter to the logical conclusion, saying that he is against the demolition of places of worship.
Petitioner Raju D’Souza told the media that he has filed the petition on behalf of Churchill to give justice to the community and to expose the Delhi government. “The Delhi Chief Minister had feigned ignorance about the church demolition when he had come down to Goa. Goans are not fools”, he said.
TMC leader Adv Seoula Vas said the writ petition has drawn the attention of the High Court to the sequence of events leading to the demolition of the church without following the principle of natural justice.
“The principle of natural justice was not followed before the demolition of the church. This is a cardinal sin committed by those who have demolished the church. The church was not given the time to explore legal remedies. It was an entirely illegal demolition. What the Delhi government has demolished was not just a physical structure, but they have demolished a house of prayer and the sentiments of the Catholic community”, Adv Seoula Vas.
Churchill also attacked the Congress for its stoic silence over the demolition of the Little Flowers Church, saying none of the Goa Congress leaders, who were in Delhi, visited the site to inquire into the demolition.
